Château Ksara, Lebanon's oldest winery, was established in 1857 when Jesuit Fathers inherited the estate and began farming a 27-hectare plot to produce Lebanon's first non-sweet red wine — laying the foundations of the country's modern wine industry.
They were continuing a 5,000-year-old trading tradition. Lebanon sits on the site of ancient Phoenicia, one of the world's oldest merchant civilizations and among the first to sell wine to other nations.
